“I GOT YOU BABE” by SONNY & CHER

Born in Detroit, Michigan on February 16th 1935, Salvatore Philip Bono, better known as Sonny Bono, was an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and politician.

He initially gained fame as part of the musical duo “Sonny & Cher”, alongside his then-wife, Cherilyn Sarkisian. Together, they rose to prominence (in the mid-1960s) with hits like “I Got You Babe,” “The Beat Goes On,” and “Baby Don’t Go.”

After the duo divorced and disbanded (in 1975), he continued his career in the entertainment industry, and eventually ventured into politics, where he went on to serve as the mayor of Palm Springs, California, from 1988 to 1992. In 1994, he transitioned to national politics and was elected to the United States House of Representatives (a position he held until his death).

On this very day, January 5th 1998, Sonny Bono passed away at the age of 62, as a result of a skiing accident.

In memory of his passing, exactly 26 years ago today, I have chosen the song that helped put him on the map, and that you can easily listen to by clicking on the provided YouTube link. Released on July 9th 1965, here’s SONNY & CHER with “I GOT YOU BABE”….
