“OH BOY” by BUDDY HOLLY
Buddy Holly, a central figure in the early development of rock and roll, was born in Lubbock, Texas on September 7th, 1936. His music and style influenced many subsequent artists, including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan.
In 1957, he formed the Crickets, and (together) they went on to release their breakthrough hit, “That’ll Be the Day”. His song catalog also included many other hits, such as “Everyday”, “Peggy Sue”, “Not Fade Away”, “Rave On”, and the song I chose for today.
On this very day, February 3rd, 1959, Buddy Holly passed away at the tender age of 22, after being involved in a disastrous plane crash (that also claimed the lives of fellow musicians, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper). In memory of his passing, exactly 65 years ago today, I have chosen a song that epitomizes the sound he became known for. If you’d like to have a listen, please feel free to use the provided link. Released on October 27th 1957, here’s BUDDY HOLLY, with “OH BOY”….
